MRI

Uses a strong magnet and radio waves to build up a very detailed image of body structures.

It is particularly useful in the brain, joints and spine. Patients' with an implanted metal device such as a pacemaker or older style surgical clips are not suitable for MRI.

Having an MR scan involves lying on a couch which moves into the magnet. Space is quite tight and patients with claustrophobia may wish to visit the unit first to see the machine (see FAQs).
